How to kicksled?Riding a kicksled is fun and simple and principally everyone can manage it easily. The principle is quite simple – just place your hands on the handlebar, one of your legs on the supporting leg’s footstall on the runner and use your other leg to push the sled forward. Place your bodyweight on the supporting leg! It is recommended that you change the leg you push with once in a while – the optimal interval being 5-8 pushes. To change kicking leg, place it on the free skate and continue kicking with the other leg. If the road goes uphill kick more often and also harder, making the kicks shorter. Also change the pushing leg more often. If the road is flat or going downhill ride easy, with long and smooth kicks and change the pushing leg less often. Let the sled slide, you just enjoy the ride. If you wish to use the kicksled for exercising and ride faster then place the footstalls in the back of the skates and the handlebar in a lower position, doing so you exercise the whole body, the impulsive force is bigger and the stress load on the pushing leg is smaller. The pushing movement: raise the kicking leg in front of you and bend it from the knee. Fling the leg against the ground with a sudden movement pushing yourself and the sled forward until your leg is spread backwards in full length. Then relax the muscles of the pushing leg. Bring the pushing leg forward again and repeat the movement. The higher you lift your leg the stronger the kick. For turning place your bodyweight on the legs, turn the handlebar and lean toward the direction you wish to turn. Kick with the leg opposite your turning direction. When riding on ice, it is advisory to use special soles with nails or even special footwear. When descending hold the handlebar firmly and place your bodyweight lower – bend your knees or you can even squat down, this way the danger of falling is smaller and the sled stays under your control. To brake – push the heels in the ground keeping the toes on the footstalls. If the speed isn’t very fast you can brake by placing one leg on the ground between the skates. But you should never jump off a moving sled with both legs – this may end in falling and injuring yourself and the sled may just ride away! But if you are already falling then let go of the handlebar – this way you don't pull the sled onto yourself. Kicksledding is a nice way to enjoy winter and the riding technique is easy to learn. So, let’s kicksled, everybody!
